Attack Details

The fire at the Lavra was extinguished at 8:35 a.m. local time, according to Interior Affairs Minister Ihor Klymenko. Reserve director Maksym Ostapenko said the attack had done 'very serious damage' to many of the monastery's landmarks, including at least five of national significance and several others of local significance. The worst damage was to the Dormition Cathedral, also known as the Great Church, with its iconostasis, murals, and frescoes severely damaged.

Response and Blame

Ukraine's Security Service said a Russian drone struck the cathedral around 1:50 a.m., while Russia's Defense Ministry claimed the fire was caused by a 'malfunction' of a Ukrainian air defense Patriot missile. The ministry alleged that the 'Kyiv regime' had been supplied with 'expired missiles.'

History of the Cathedral

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra dates to the 11th century, with the Dormition Cathedral laid in 1073 and completed by 1078. The cathedral has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, with its current appearance reflecting a restoration in the 1990s. The names of the medieval builders and craftsmen are lost to history, but evidence suggests they were foreigners, with construction methods comparable to those used in Constantinople.
