Under Russia’s Gaze, Serbia and Ukraine Tentatively Build Bridges

Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, was all smiles while welcoming the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Taras Kachka, on his visit to Belgrade on Thursday, according to photos and videos from the meeting. The language was friendly, too. Vucic said they held an “open and meaningful conversation” about cooperation, economy and the path to European Union accession, although both Serbia and Ukraine face many obstacles ahead.

“Special emphasis was placed on strengthening economic cooperation, continuing negotiations on a free trade agreement, as well as exploring possibilities for further increasing trade exchange, investments, and cooperation in the areas of trade, energy, and infrastructure,” Vucic wrote on Instagram. Kachka and Serbia’s Interior and Foreign Trade Minister, Jagoda Lazarevic, signed a joint statement on continuing negotiations on a free-trade agreement.
