Armed men attacked the Kenscoff community near Port-au-Prince, resulting in significant casualties and one of the largest mass kidnappings in recent years.

At least 47 people were killed and more than 50 others were kidnapped during a violent gang attack in the Kenscoff neighborhood near Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. The United Nations confirmed the figures on Tuesday, noting that 22 of the victims were reportedly executed inside a church compound where they had sought refuge. The assault, which occurred on Sunday, is considered one of the largest mass kidnappings in the country in recent years.

Hostage Threats and Security Concerns

A gang leader identifying himself as Izo 2 has threatened to kill the hostages if authorities harm any gang members during security operations. Romain Le Cour, head of the Haiti Observatory at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, described the situation as a major test for the government and police. He noted that the threat creates a difficult dilemma for security forces, as any intervention could risk the lives of the captives. While some survivors have criticized the government for failing to provide adequate protection, Haiti’s National Police have rejected these claims. The police announced an investigation into the incident to determine if there was any negligence or complicity, and have deployed additional specialized units to the area.

Impact on the Local Community

Residents of Kenscoff described the violence as overwhelming, with some reporting that they had to flee over bodies to escape. Marc Paul, a 42-year-old resident, stated that his brother, stepmother, stepfather, and two cousins were among those kidnapped. His 16-year-old niece was also abducted and raped but managed to escape and reunite with her family. This attack follows a previous incident in January 2025 that had already displaced many families in the area.
