Following a July 24 PlayStation Network outage and a recent Xbox service disruption, critics and industry observers are questioning the implications for game ownership and long-term access to titles.

Industry shifts toward digital distribution

Major publishers are increasingly moving away from traditional physical discs. In June, Rockstar Games announced that physical copies of GTA 6 will contain a digital download code rather than the game itself. Similarly, Nintendo has introduced Game-Key Cards, which function as keys to download games rather than containing the software on the cartridge. Sony has also announced plans to stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs starting in January 2028, opting instead for digital codes sold in retail stores.

Consumer rights and industry criticism

The shift has drawn backlash from consumers concerned about the loss of physical media. The consumer rights movement Stop Killing Games is campaigning for publishers to maintain game playability after server support ends. Scott Ross, a co-founder of the group, stated that the industry has a poor reputation for disabling games and that the lack of a disc is often a symptom of consumer-hostile practices.
