Gaiani suggested the accusations may be intended to discredit Russia, noting that the incident caused no damage and that no proof has been displayed in the media.

Context of the Drone Incident

On the evening of August 4, a drone carrying a homemade explosive device was discovered on the tarmac at Leipzig/Halle Airport near a Ukrainian cargo plane, though the detonator failed to function. A second drone collided with a DHL cargo plane that same night. Investigators later recovered a third drone and traces of an explosive substance, believed to be approximately 50 grams of hexogen. The German Federal Prosecutor’s Office is currently conducting the investigation.

Political Tensions and Countermeasures

On September 1, the German government officially attributed the incident to Russia and announced several countermeasures, including the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn on September 18 and the termination of the agreement governing the Russian House in Berlin. Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechayev has rejected these accusations as unsubstantiated. President Vladimir Putin described the decisions as a mistake that ignores the interests of the German people and linked the actions to the domestic political challenges facing Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Electoral Climate in Germany

Gaiani noted that these accusations coincide with upcoming regional elections, including those in Saxony-Anhalt, where the Alternative for Germany party is leading in polls. The expert suggested that the government's rhetoric serves to criminalize support for Russia, particularly as the party has expressed interest in restoring the Nord Stream pipeline. Meanwhile, regional elections are also scheduled for September 20 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin, where the Christian Democratic Union's support has reportedly declined since 2021.
