Jürgen Klopp has named an expansive 44-man squad for Germany's upcoming international break, drawing attention to the nation's ongoing struggle to secure players with dual citizenship. Several players in the current setup, including Eintracht Frankfurt's Younes Ebnoutalib, are eligible to represent other countries. If these players participate in upcoming competitive UEFA Nations League matches, they will be cap-tied to Germany, preventing them from switching their international allegiance in the future.

Diverse eligibility within the squad

The current German squad features numerous players with diverse international roots. Vitaly Janelt is eligible for Czechia, while Bambase Conte and Josha Vagnoman have ties to Guinea and Ivory Coast, respectively. Other players with dual-nationality options include Finn Dahmen, Noah Atubolu, Said El Mala, and Brajan Gruda. Many of these athletes were born and raised in Germany and have previously represented the country at various youth levels.

Competition for international talent

The German Football Association (DFB) faces increasing pressure to compete with other nations for players. According to DFB managing director for sport Andreas Rettig, over 40% of children in Germany under age 5 have a migration background, which will provide them with future options to play for different countries. Germany has already lost several prospects, including Ibrahim Maza to Algeria, Paul Wanner to Austria, and Can Uzun to Turkey, all of whom participated in the 2026 World Cup.
