Google has begun rolling out support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) within its Google Home ecosystem. This integration allows AI agents that support the standard to securely interact with connected home devices and access event histories. The feature is currently available in early access for subscribers of the Google Home Premium Advanced tier in the United States.

Functionality and Supported Agents

The MCP integration enables users to employ natural language instructions to manage their smart home environments. Supported capabilities include reviewing camera summaries, monitoring activity, controlling connected hardware, and creating custom dashboards. The system is compatible with all devices in the Google Home ecosystem, including Google Nest products and third-party devices labeled as 'Works with Google Home' or Matter-certified. Users can connect various AI agents to their home setup, including Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT, and Google Antigravity. To initiate the connection, users must create a Google Cloud project, configure it for Home MCP, and grant the chosen agent permission to access their account.

Availability and Security Considerations

The early access rollout began on Wednesday and is expected to continue over the coming weeks. It is exclusive to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers, a tier priced at $20 per month or $200 annually. Google is currently soliciting feedback on the implementation through its Smart Home for Developers Community and has not provided details regarding potential expansion to other subscription tiers or international markets. While the protocol facilitates connectivity between chatbots and external APIs, some experts have raised concerns regarding potential security vulnerabilities within the MCP standard, specifically citing issues related to authentication.
