A Moscow court has jailed the son of Anna Kameneva, an associate professor at Moscow State University, following her death.

Moscow’s Tverskoy Court has ordered the pretrial detention of the son of Anna Kameneva, an associate professor at Moscow State University’s Higher School of State Audit. The son has been charged with the murder of his mother, whose body was discovered with a neck wound at a home in the village of Zhukovka.

Discovery of the Crime

News of Kameneva’s death became public on August 26. Authorities found her body at a house in Zhukovka, a village located outside of Moscow. Investigators also recovered shell casings and a nonlethal handgun designed to fire rubber bullets at the scene. Moscow State University’s press office has confirmed her death.

Background and Investigation

Kameneva had been a faculty member in the Higher School of State Audit’s economic and financial investigations department since 2011. She was the widow of Gadzhi Makhachev, a former State Duma deputy and former deputy prime minister of Dagestan who died in a 2013 car accident. While the victim's son is currently in custody, reports from Komsomolskaya Pravda previously identified a close friend of the son as a suspect who fled the scene, noting that the motive may have involved family finances.
