Netflix has canceled the romantic drama series Sweet Magnolias following its fifth season. The show, which starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley, concluded three months after the release of its final season. Despite the cancellation, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson and star JoAnna Garcia Swisher are continuing their partnership with Netflix on a new series titled Ladies of the House.

Performance and Background

Based on novels by Sherryl Woods, Sweet Magnolias followed the lives of three long-time best friends. According to Netflix’s internal data, the show’s audience declined during its fourth and fifth seasons. The fifth season spent three weeks in the streamer’s worldwide top 10 for English-language series and appeared on Nielsen’s U.S. charts for four weeks.

Upcoming Project Ladies of the House

The new series, Ladies of the House, is based on a novel by Lauren Edmondson and centers on a family-owned winery. The plot follows a wife and her two adult daughters who must resolve personal conflicts to manage the business and their extended family following the unexpected death of the winery's owner. Sheryl J. Anderson will serve as showrunner for the project. JoAnna Garcia Swisher is set to executive produce the series alongside Kate Gordon through their company, Rolling Clover, in partnership with Black Label Media. Swisher may also take on an on-screen role in the production. Both Anderson and Swisher expressed enthusiasm for continuing their creative collaboration with Netflix, which Swisher noted has been her creative home for the past seven years.
