Russian musician Alisher Morgenshtern stated in an interview with YouTuber Yury Dud that individuals with ties to Russian authorities offered him a way to return to the country. The proposed conditions included a public apology, a visit to occupied territories, or a payment of $1 million. Morgenshtern said he refused these options because he does not believe he committed any wrongdoing and does not wish to support the war.

Departure and Legal Issues

Morgenshtern left Russia in November 2021 after the Investigative Committee began reviewing his work for potential drug propaganda. He stated that his departure followed a meeting at the Presidential Administration where he was threatened with a 15-year prison sentence and warned against provocative actions, such as a joke he made regarding a plastic cup incident involving police.

Foreign Agent Status

The Russian Justice Ministry designated Morgenshtern a "foreign agent" in May 2022. In 2024, authorities opened a criminal case against him for failing to comply with the requirements of that status and placed him on a wanted list. In April 2026, a Moscow court fined him 7 million rubles in absentia for failing to include the mandatory disclaimer on his posts, and his Moscow property has been frozen.
