During the meeting, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul urged Russia to abandon its path of escalation toward Europe and NATO. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov dismissed the appeal, characterizing the discussion as a mere reiteration of existing positions rather than a substantive dialogue.

Diplomatic Tensions and Meeting Details

The meeting between Wadephul and Lavrov addressed bilateral ties, the war in Ukraine, and the security of grain exports via the Black Sea. Following the encounter, Wadephul informed European allies that he had used the opportunity to demand an immediate ceasefire and emphasize the protection of energy infrastructure. Lavrov later criticized Germany’s support for Ukraine and stated that Russia would veto any German bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
