Russian Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, warned that a new IAEA Board of Governors resolution against Iran could trigger a fresh round of escalation. Speaking at an IAEA meeting, Ulyanov described the measure as biased and counterproductive to resolving existing nuclear issues.

Criticism of IAEA Board Actions

Ulyanov alleged that the United States and the E3 nations—the United Kingdom, Germany, and France—are using the IAEA as a tool to settle political scores. He characterized their frequent introduction of anti-Iranian resolutions as a "conveyor belt" of provocations, dismissing their stated commitment to diplomacy as a "smokescreen."

Resolution Details and Session Context

The recently passed resolution accuses Tehran of violating nuclear non-proliferation obligations and is slated for review by the UN Security Council and the General Assembly. The measure received 23 votes in favor, with three countries voting against and eight abstaining. The current IAEA Board of Governors session, which began in Vienna on September 7, is scheduled to conclude on September 11.
