Historian Artem Kirpichenok has been held in an Israeli detention facility for over a month, with family members reporting he is suspected of espionage.

Artem Kirpichenok, a 51-year-old Russian-Israeli historian and writer, has been held in an Israeli Shin Bet detention facility since his arrival in Tel Aviv on August 2. While Israeli authorities have not publicly disclosed the reason for his arrest, family representatives state he is suspected of espionage and contacting a foreign intelligence agent. Kirpichenok, who specializes in Middle Eastern and Central Asian studies, was detained upon arrival at the airport.

Kirpichenok is currently held in a pretrial facility in Petah Tikva, where his family reports he is kept in a cell with lights on at all times and no access to reading or writing materials. During a court hearing on August 27 in Ashkelon, his lawyer, Inna Lebedinskaya-Katz, requested that a confession be excluded from evidence, arguing it was obtained under pressure from investigators. The court denied a request to move Kirpichenok to house arrest at his apartment in Ashkelon, citing the severity of the potential charges.

Family representatives suggest the international conference Kirpichenok intended to attend may have been a trap, as local officials stated no such event was scheduled. Beyond espionage allegations, investigators have reportedly raised concerns regarding a 2018 trip Kirpichenok took to Iran, which is classified as an enemy state under Israeli law. Kirpichenok has previously published sharp criticisms of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli policies toward Palestinians.
