New Zealand initially neutralized the Springboks' momentum, with Ardie Savea scoring the opening try after South Africa's Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu was sent to the sin-bin for a deliberate knock-on. The first half saw both teams trade two tries each, with New Zealand’s tactical play and ball-in-hand ambition testing the South African defense. Both sides suffered early injury blows, with South Africa’s Cheslin Kolbe leaving the field with a head injury after 10 minutes, and New Zealand losing Ardie Savea to an injury late in the first half.

The match remained close until the 55th minute, when Will Jordan scored to give New Zealand a 17-12 lead. South Africa responded immediately as Jesse Kriel broke through the defense to score, shifting the momentum in favor of the hosts.
