András Baka was removed from his position as Supreme Court president by the Fidesz government in 2011, an action later ruled unlawful by the European Court of Human Rights. In a statement posted to Facebook, the Tisza party praised Baka for his commitment to the separation of powers, the rule of law, and judicial independence. The party stated that Baka represents the best guarantee for restoring the dignity of the presidential office and acting as a counterbalance to the ruling majority. The nomination follows the resignation of former President Tamás Sulyok, who stepped down last month after facing public pressure from Prime Minister Magyar. Magyar’s initial choice for the role, chess grandmaster Judit Polgár, declined the nomination due to the stress associated with the position.
