The Ukrainian General Staff estimates Russia has lost nearly 1.5 million troops since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on Sept. 6 that Russia has lost approximately 1,496,440 troops since the full-scale invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022. This total includes 1,390 casualties reported over the previous 24-hour period. Ukraine does not disclose its own military losses, citing operational secrecy.

Reported Russian Equipment Losses

In addition to personnel casualties, the Ukrainian military report details significant losses of Russian hardware. These include 12,331 tanks, 25,278 armored combat vehicles, and 49,260 artillery systems. The report also lists 441 aircraft, 355 helicopters, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines among the destroyed assets.

Estimates of Ukrainian Casualties

While official Ukrainian figures remain undisclosed, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated in January 2026 that Ukraine suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties between February 2022 and December 2025. Of those, between 100,000 and 140,000 are estimated to be killed in action. Separately, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Feb. 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action, noting that intense fighting and drone activity complicate the recovery of remains for identification.
