Diplomatic Meetings in Moscow and Kyiv

The meeting in Moscow concluded without any announced breakthroughs. Yuri Ushakov, a foreign policy adviser to President Putin, characterized the discussions as constructive, frank, and useful. Beyond the conflict in Ukraine, Ushakov noted that the talks covered economic issues and potential large-scale joint projects between Russia and the United States. Following their arrival in Kyiv by train from Poland, the envoys are expected to engage in discussions with Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on social media that Kyiv is prepared for constructive dialogue, emphasizing the need for security guarantees and a sustainable postwar peace. Reports indicate that national security advisors from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany were also present in Kyiv for the talks.

Conflict Context and Recent Escalation

The war, which has lasted four-and-a-half years, has seen a recent intensification of air strikes. While Putin and Zelenskyy reportedly agreed to pause strikes on their respective capitals during the diplomatic talks, officials reported that both sides traded fire overnight into Sunday. Russian attacks across multiple Ukrainian regions resulted in one death and at least 10 injuries. Front-line progress remains difficult along the 1,250-kilometer battle line. While the U.S. has sought to revive peace efforts, momentum had previously stalled following unsuccessful talks in January. Kyrylo Budanov, Zelenskyy's chief of staff, recently stated he does not expect the fighting to conclude before spring 2027.
