Over 140,000 people have been evacuated across Spain and France as authorities struggle to contain massive, fast-moving wildfires fueled by extreme heat and drought.

Wildfires near Madrid have been declared a national emergency in Spain, with officials warning the blazes are currently beyond their capacity to contain. Simultaneously, more than 110,000 people have been evacuated in south-west France as fires tear through the Gironde and Landes regions. The situation is being exacerbated by a combination of high temperatures, relentless winds, and prolonged drought conditions across both countries.

Crisis in the Madrid Region

Three fires west of Madrid have merged into a single blaze, prompting the evacuation of at least 30,000 people and placing another 20,000 under lockdown. Regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso described the event as the worst fire in the region's history. The Military Emergency Unit has been deployed to protect areas near El Escorial, while authorities work to prevent the Madrid fire from merging with a separate blaze in Ávila province.

Escalating Situation in France

In France, the Gironde blaze has consumed over 19,000 hectares and destroyed approximately 80 homes. The fire shifted direction on Friday, moving toward Bordeaux, leading to further evacuation orders. President Emmanuel Macron has mobilized the military and activated the European Union's civil protection mechanism to secure reinforcements, including helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Environmental and Human Impact

Officials report that at least 6,000 hectares have burned in the Madrid region, while the Ávila fire has consumed nearly 9,000 hectares. In France, around 50 firefighters have been injured. Authorities in Spain have arrested one person and are investigating another in connection to the Burgohondo fire, which is suspected to have been caused by negligence involving heavy machinery.
