A woman died in Latisana after her car became trapped in a flooded underpass, one of several incidents reported as severe storms caused widespread disruption across Italy.

A woman drowned inside her vehicle on Thursday after it became trapped in a flooded underpass in the northeastern Italian town of Latisana. A Carabinieri officer attempted to rescue her by diving into the water, but despite successfully pulling her from the car, she could not be saved. The officer required hospital treatment following the rescue attempt as severe storms caused significant flooding and infrastructure damage across multiple regions of the country.

Widespread Infrastructure and Transport Disruption

The extreme weather caused significant travel delays and damage throughout northern and central Italy. In the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, where Latisana is located, numerous train services were cancelled or delayed by up to an hour. Rail disruptions were also reported in other parts of northern Italy beginning on Wednesday. In the town of Cataeggio, near Sondrio, a landslide forced the closure of schools and the evacuation of approximately 45 residents from their homes.

Regional Emergency Responses

Emergency services were mobilized across the country to address the impact of the storms. In the Adriatic region of Marche, firefighters conducted over 100 interventions to secure buildings and clear fallen trees and branches. Meanwhile, in Brescia, torrential rain resulted in flooding within parts of the Civili hospital. Tuscany also experienced intense electrical activity, with over 63,000 lightning bolts recorded over a 12-hour period overnight.
