Apple has scheduled its upcoming iPhone event for September 9 at 10 am Pacific. While the company typically releases its full range of devices in the fall, reports indicate that Apple will prioritize premium models this year, potentially delaying the base iPhone 18, an iPhone 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air until the spring of 2027.

Strategic Shift in Product Releases

Nabila Popal, a senior director at IDC, notes that Apple is likely splitting its launch schedule to balance revenue between the historically strong fourth quarter and the typically weaker spring period. By focusing on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in the fall, Apple aims to cater to customers willing to pay for premium devices while avoiding the need to raise prices on its entry-level models during a period of manufacturing cost increases.

Market Pressures and Pricing

The strategy shift follows ongoing memory shortages that have increased manufacturing costs across the tech industry. Former CEO Tim Cook previously acknowledged that Apple would raise product prices to offset these expenses. Analysts suggest this 'premiumization' allows Apple to maintain margins while leveraging financing and leasing programs, such as the rental initiative launched in July, to keep high-end devices accessible to consumers.

The Rise of Foldable Devices

The September event may also feature the company's first foldable device, which is rumored to cost approximately $2,000. This aligns with a broader industry trend of rising prices for folding smartphones, including recent increases seen in Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy Z range, the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold, and Motorola’s 2026 Razr models.
