EU forces boarded the MV SUN tanker for flag verification as part of an ongoing effort to monitor vessels suspected of bypassing sanctions against Russia.

A European naval mission boarded a Russia-linked oil tanker, the MV SUN, in the Mediterranean on Sunday to conduct a flag verification. EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas announced the operation on Monday, noting that the vessel is suspected of being part of a 'shadow fleet' used to circumvent Western sanctions.

Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI

The boarding was carried out by personnel under Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, an EU initiative originally launched in 2020 to enforce a UN arms embargo on Libya. The mission's scope has since been expanded to include verification boardings of vessels suspected of opaque ownership.

Broader EU Sanctions and Tensions

Kallas stated that this is the sixth such vessel boarded by EU operations in recent months. EU defense ministers are scheduled to discuss further actions against the shadow fleet during a meeting in Ireland on Tuesday. In July, the EU established a mechanism to confiscate and sell Russian oil from vessels attempting to evade sanctions. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously characterized such interceptions as 'piracy' and vowed to retaliate if European countries seize Russian commercial vessels.
