Director of Natural Resources James Wilson cited several factors contributing to the low biomass, including oceanographic currents that swept squid out of the area in 2024. He also noted an increase in predatory hake, which he attributed to closures in Argentine fishing grounds. Additionally, Wilson pointed to increased pressure on the fishery due to larger, more powerful vessels and changes in fishing practices, despite the number of vessels remaining stable.

John Barton, acting chair of the Loligo Producers Group, emphasized that the fishery is a major component of the Falklands' economy and government finances. The department is currently reviewing potential mitigation measures for the 2027 seasons, including the possibility of placing a vessel in the Loligo Box between seasons to monitor hake influx. A report for the Fishery Advisory Committee in September will propose increasing effort on A licences to target hake.
