George Russell claimed victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, leading all 51 laps at the Baku City Circuit. The Mercedes driver held off a late charge from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, crossing the finish line just 0.196 seconds ahead of the four-time world champion. The win marks Russell's second victory of the 2026 season and his first since the Austrian Grand Prix in June.

Race Dynamics and Safety Cars

Russell initially built a lead of more than 10 seconds, but the advantage was repeatedly neutralized by two safety-car periods that bunched the field together. Despite the pressure, Russell maintained his position through the closing stages as Verstappen, who started eighth, mounted a fierce recovery drive. The result leaves Verstappen without a win this season, marking his longest winless streak since his 2016 rookie campaign.

Championship Standings and Driver Performance

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli faced a difficult weekend after crashing during Friday's qualifying session, which left him starting 16th on the grid. He managed a recovery drive to finish fifth, limiting the damage to his lead in the drivers' championship. Following the race, Russell narrowed the gap to Antonelli to 66 points with 15 rounds completed. Isack Hadjar, returning to the Red Bull lineup after missing three races due to a wrist injury, secured third place to join the podium.
