The German Olympic Sports Confederation has named Munich as the country's official candidate city for upcoming Olympic Summer Games bids.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) announced on Saturday that it has selected Munich as Germany's entry for future Olympic Summer Games bids. The decision follows a selection process that included a competing bid from the Rhine-Ruhr region. Munich was chosen over the Cologne-led proposal to represent the country in its efforts to host at least the next three Olympic Summer Games.

Bid Details and Competition

The Munich bid proposes hosting all competitions within Bavaria, with the exception of football matches, which would be held in Stuttgart, and sailing events, which would take place in Kiel. The selection process narrowed down to Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region after Berlin withdrew its bid on Thursday following the city's recent elections. Munich previously hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics and made unsuccessful bids for the 2018 and 2022 Winter Games.

Government Perspectives

Sports Minister Ronald Rauhe expressed support for a potential 2040 bid, noting that the year would mark the 50th anniversary of German reunification. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated that the Olympic bid offers an opportunity for Germany to demonstrate its status as a land of opportunity. Minister Rauhe emphasized that the primary goal remains bringing the Olympic and Paralympic Games back to Germany regardless of the specific year.
