Lewis Hamilton has stated that his Formula One world championship challenge is likely out of reach following a disappointing sixth-place finish at the Italian Grand Prix. Hamilton, who now trails leader Kimi Antonelli by 76 points with 10 races remaining, criticized Ferrari for failing to manage its drivers effectively or prioritize his title bid earlier in the season.

On-Track Conflict with Leclerc

The race at Monza featured an early incident between Hamilton and his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc. On the first lap at the first chicane, Hamilton attempted to pass Leclerc but was squeezed wide, forcing him off the track and dropping him to 10th place. Leclerc later retired from the race following a significant crash on lap two, though he emerged unhurt.

Criticism of Team Management

Hamilton expressed frustration with Ferrari’s leadership, specifically pointing to team principal Fred Vasseur. He argued that the team lacks clear 'rules of engagement' and failed to listen to his requests for better race management. Hamilton contrasted this with his time at Mercedes, where he noted the team maintained established rules to prevent internal conflict.

Ferrari's Potential Shift in Strategy

Following the race, Vasseur acknowledged that the outcome at Monza was poor for the team and suggested that Ferrari may now consider prioritizing Hamilton. Vasseur noted that while he previously felt it was too early to implement team orders, the team will now discuss how to proceed before the next round in Madrid.
