Smith began his career in 1970 after taking courses in clothes construction and opening a small shop in Nottingham. He eventually grew the business to employ more than 1,200 people, with annual turnover reaching over £200 million at its peak. Throughout his career, Smith has declined multiple offers to sell his company, preferring to maintain control rather than answer to shareholders.

Navigating Modern Challenges

The company has faced difficulties following the pandemic and the impact of Brexit, reporting a loss of more than £22 million last year. Smith notes that while the brand is not as relevant as it once was, he believes the company is on the verge of breaking even again. He attributes his longevity to hard work and a willingness to reassess his approach, despite noting that the current global climate feels more difficult than previous economic downturns.
