The UK government is imposing a comprehensive trade ban on Israeli settlements in the West Bank, citing settler violence and ethnic cleansing.

UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced on Tuesday that the British government will implement a sweeping trade ban on goods and services from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Miliband stated that the government now officially recognizes the presence of ethnic cleansing against Palestinians in the region, perpetrated by what he described as "settler terrorists" with the tacit backing of the Israeli government.

Sanctions and Trade Restrictions

The new measures include a total import ban on goods produced in illegal settlements and a comprehensive sanctions regime targeting services such as construction, financing, and real estate development. Additionally, the UK will ban the advertising of settlement properties and impose personal sanctions on individuals accused of inciting or supporting settler violence. Miliband stated that legislation to enforce these bans is expected to be in place within six to nine months. Beyond trade, the UK is expanding its existing restrictions on arms exports to include any items that materially contribute to the occupation of Palestinian territories. The government confirmed that its prior suspension of 30 arms export licenses remains in effect.

International Coordination

The UK is coordinating these actions with a coalition of nations. Miliband noted that France and Canada are also implementing bans on goods from Israeli settlements. Other countries, including Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, Belgium, and the Netherlands, have either pledged support for further action or are in the process of implementing their own restrictions on settlement trade.
