Volvo is upgrading its XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid SUVs with larger battery packs, significantly increasing their all-electric driving range.

Volvo has announced major updates to its XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrid SUVs, centered on a new 37.9 kWh usable battery pack. The upgrades more than double the all-electric range for both models, aiming to bridge the gap between internal combustion and full electrification. The XC60 will also begin production at Volvo’s South Carolina plant to better serve the U.S. market.

Powertrain and Performance Upgrades

The updated T8 plug-in hybrid models retain the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with electric motors, maintaining a system output of 455 horsepower. The new 41.2 kWh gross (37.9 kWh net) battery allows the XC60 to achieve an EPA-estimated 78 miles of electric-only range, while the larger XC90 reaches 73 miles. Combined with a full tank of gas, the XC60 offers a total range of 590 miles, and the XC90 provides 560 miles. Acceleration remains a key feature, with the XC60 T8 capable of reaching 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The XC90 is slightly slower, trailing by 0.4 seconds. For buyers preferring non-plug-in options, Volvo continues to offer B5 mild-hybrid versions for both SUVs, with the XC60 B5 producing 247 horsepower and the XC90 B6 offering 295 horsepower.

Technology and Manufacturing

The XC60 receives an updated sensor suite, including a new radar sensor in the front and improved 360-degree cameras, supported by a more powerful processor. Both the XC60 and XC90 now feature a Gemini-enabled infotainment system displayed on an 11.2-inch screen. To address market demand and tariff incentives, Volvo is expanding production of the XC60 to its South Carolina facility, supplementing the existing production line in Sweden.
